2hr Fire Rated

Two hour fire rated access panels in metal door, picture frame and beaded frame formats. The critical detail on this page is orientation: some panels achieve two hours in a wall only, others achieve it in both wall and ceiling, and the fire strategy dictates which you need.

Fire performance is tested by orientation, so check whether the two hour requirement applies in a wall or a ceiling before you order.

All of these panels can be manufactured to bespoke sizes. Send us the opening and the rating the compartment line calls for and we will confirm the right panel.

Two hours in a wall is not two hours in a ceiling

Fire resistance is tested by orientation, and the same panel can carry different ratings in a wall and in a ceiling. This range contains two families that reach two hours by different routes, tested to different standards. Check which the compartment line actually requires before ordering.

APD panels: two hours in a wall, one hour in a ceiling

The APD.MD.PF/FR60/120 (picture frame) and APD.MD.BF/FR60/120 (beaded frame) are tested to give up to two hours integrity in a wall system and one hour in a ceiling system, in accordance with BS EN 1634-1:2008 and BS EN 1363-1:1988. Both come with a three way locking system and metal key as standard.

FlipFix panels: two hours in both wall and ceiling

The MD.PF.FF/FR120 (picture frame) and MD.BF.FF/FR120 (beaded frame) are two hour rated in both wall and ceiling applications, tested in accordance with BS476: Part 22: 1987, and use the FlipFix face fixing mechanism. Both are supplied with a budget lock and tee key.

Choosing between them

If the two hour requirement is in a ceiling, the FlipFix FR120 panels are the ones tested for it. If it is in a wall, either family qualifies, so choose on fixing method and locking. Note the two families are tested to different standards, BS EN 1634-1 against BS476 Part 22, so where a specification names the standard, match it.

Ordering and installation

Order by panel size: the structural opening should be 5mm larger than the panel, so a 600 x 600 panel needs a 605 x 605 opening. Fire rated panels carry intumescent strips on the frame which expand under heat to seal the opening. Do not paint over, remove or damage them during installation or decoration.

All of these panels can also be manufactured to bespoke sizes where the opening is non standard.
