Picture Frame

A picture frame access panel sits on the face of the wall or ceiling, with a slim flange that overlaps the surrounding surface. It is the simplest frame to fit, the easiest to retrofit into an existing opening, and the one to choose when the panel is allowed to read as a panel. Non-fire rated through to two hour fire rated, in standard and made to measure sizes.

Every panel here can be made to a bespoke size if your opening is non standard.

Choose your specification below, or send us the opening dimensions and the performance the job has to meet and we will confirm what suits.

What a picture frame access panel is

The picture frame is the visible flange that surrounds the door. It rests on the face of the plasterboard, plaster or tiled surface rather than sitting flush within it, so the finished panel stands slightly proud of the wall or ceiling. That overlap is what makes it forgiving: it covers the cut edge of the opening and hides the small tolerances that come with cutting into an existing surface.

Panels in this range are manufactured from Zintec steel with a polyester powder coating in matt white RAL 9010. Door and hinge arrangements differ between specifications, so check the individual product for the detail that matters to your job.

The alternative is a beaded frame, which is plastered or taped into the surface so the finished panel sits flush and can be decorated to disappear. Choose a picture frame where speed, retrofit and easy re-entry matter. Choose beaded where the panel must be invisible.

Choosing the right picture frame panel

Every panel in this range shares the same frame type. What separates them is fire performance, locking and any acoustic or air tightness requirement. Work from the specification the opening has to meet, then choose the door.

Non-fire rated picture frame panels

The standard specification for general access to pipework, valves, stopcocks and cabling where no fire rating applies. Manufactured from Zintec steel with a matt white RAL 9010 polyester powder coating, the flush metal door has a concealed continuous hinge and is secured with a standard budget lock.

A budget version is available where the panel is functional rather than seen. It is secured with a quarter turn lock and plastic tee key rather than a budget lock, so check which you are ordering if the locking method matters.

Both are suitable for wall and ceiling positions.

One hour fire rated picture frame panels

Two routes to a one hour rating in this range, and they are tested to different standards.

  • APD.MD.PF/FR60/120: tested to give up to one hour integrity in a ceiling and two hours in a wall, in accordance with BS EN 1634-1:2008 and BS EN 1363-1:1988. Concealed continuous hinge, secured with a three way locking system and metal key.
  • MD.PF.FF/FR60 (FlipFix): one hour rated in both wall and ceiling, tested to BS476: Part 22: 1987. Supplied with a budget lock and tee key.

Important: fire rated panels carry intumescent strips fitted to the frame. These expand under heat to seal the opening and must not be painted over, removed or interfered with during installation or decoration.

Two hour fire rated picture frame panels

The two hour panel in this range is the FlipFix MD.PF.FF/FR120, rated for two hours in both wall and ceiling applications and tested in accordance with BS476: Part 22: 1987. It is supplied with a budget lock and tee key.

Note that it is a different specification from the one hour APD.MD.PF panel, not simply a longer rated version of it: different fixing mechanism, different lock, and a different test standard. Confirm which the fire strategy calls for before ordering.

Acoustic and airtight picture frame panels

For risers, plant spaces and party constructions where the opening has to hold a sound or air pressure requirement as well as a fire rating. The APD.MD.PF.SF-FR60.AT.30dB is one hour fire rated for integrity up to 1200 x 600mm in a wall application, airtight, smoke tested and 30dB acoustic rated. Concealed continuous hinge, budget lock and plastic tee key.

  • Different opening allowance: this panel needs a structural opening 7mm larger than the panel size, not the 5mm used elsewhere in the range.

Acoustic and air tightness performance depends on the panel being installed into a construction that itself achieves the target. The panel cannot outperform the wall around it.

FlipFix picture frame panels

FlipFix panels use a fixing mechanism designed for rapid installation from the face of the opening, which removes the need to work behind the wall or ceiling. Useful on refurbishment where access to the reverse is limited or impossible.

Available non-fire rated, one hour and two hour fire rated.

Circular picture frame panels

A circular door in a picture frame, for openings formed with a hole cutter rather than cut square. Commonly used for service penetrations and inspection points where a round opening is quicker to form and neater to finish.

Available one hour fire rated, with a matching hole cutter sold separately. Contact us to confirm the diameters and fire test evidence before specifying.

Sizing and installation

Order by the panel size, not by the hole. The structural opening you form needs to be slightly larger than the panel you order, so the frame has something to sit against.

  • Allow 5mm on the opening: the structural opening should be 5mm larger than the panel size. A 600 x 600 panel needs a 605 x 605 opening.
  • The airtight acoustic panel differs: the APD.MD.PF.SF-FR60.AT.30dB needs 7mm rather than 5mm. Check the sizing table on the product before cutting.
  • Check both diagonals: an opening that is out of square will show along the flange edge.
  • Confirm wall or ceiling: fire ratings differ between the two positions on some panels, so decide the position before ordering a fire rated panel.
  • Allow for services: position the opening so the door can open fully without fouling pipework, ductwork or cabling behind it.
  • Non-standard openings: panels can be made to measure rather than forcing the opening to fit a standard size.

Each product page carries its own sizing table showing panel size against structural opening. If you are unsure which specification the opening calls for, send us the dimensions and the performance requirement and we will confirm what is suitable.
