600 x 600 Access Panels

The 600 x 600mm panel is the workhorse of the range, big enough to reach valves, ductwork and plant connections while still fitting standard modular layouts. Filter below by fire rating, door finish and frame, or read on for fitting tolerances and the fire rated options available at this size.

Why 600 x 600 is the size services get designed around

Six hundred millimetres square is the point where an access panel stops being an inspection hatch and becomes a working opening. At this size an engineer can get both arms in, turn a valve with a tool on it, change a filter, or look properly along a duct run instead of feeling for the joint. It also drops naturally into modular ceiling layouts, so a 600 x 600 panel usually lands in a corridor or plant room ceiling without cutting across the grid or forcing an awkward reposition.

Typical duties at this size include isolating valves above a corridor ceiling, dampers and duct spigots, pump and pipework connections in a plant space, and cable containment junctions that get revisited on a maintenance cycle. In a wall it suits the same services where a technician needs room to work rather than just room to reach.

Worth saying plainly: a panel this size is for hands, tools and sight lines. It is not a personnel opening, and the door is not designed to carry the weight of a person. If someone has to get into the void itself, that is a different product entirely. To compare this size against the rest of the range, browse all access panels.

Cutting the opening for a 600 x 600 panel

The number in the product name is the panel, not the hole. Every panel needs a structural opening slightly larger than its nominal size so the frame seats cleanly and the door still sits square once the surround is made good. Take that dimension from the product page for the panel you have chosen rather than working to a remembered figure, because the allowance is not identical across the ranges or between frame types. It is also worth noting that the accessible opening, the clear space you actually reach through once the frame and door are in, is smaller than the size on the label. If a component has to pass through, measure it against the accessible opening and not against 600.

Before you cut at this size, check what is behind the finish. A 600mm aperture is wide enough to cross a joist, a stud or a run of services, and in a ceiling it can remove more board than a single fixing bay was carrying. Mark the opening, confirm the void is clear, and cut square. An out of square hole is the usual reason a large panel looks fine closed and binds as soon as it is opened.

Door and frame options at 600 x 600

All three door types below are listed at 600 x 600, in beaded and picture frame versions, so the decision comes down to the finish you need and how often the panel gets opened. Locking is shown per product, from a budget lock operated with a tee key up to heavier multi point locking where the void needs to stay properly closed. To compare only the steel faced options, see metal door access panels. Frame style matters as much as the door here: a picture frame overlaps the surrounding surface and covers the cut edge, while a beaded frame is designed to be taped, filled or boarded up to for a flush result in an exposed, finished ceiling.

Metal door

A steel door in a steel frame. The default for plant rooms, risers and corridors, and for any opening that gets used often enough that the door needs to look serviceable rather than invisible. FlipFix versions of the metal door panel are listed at this size in both frame styles.

Plasterboard faced door

A door carrying a plasterboard insert that you skim or decorate in with the surrounding surface. Chosen where the ceiling or wall is a visible, finished space and the panel should read as part of it. Standard and one hour fire rated versions are both available at 600 x 600.

Budget metal door

A lighter specification steel panel for openings that are not on show and jobs where cost leads the decision. Listed at this size with either frame type, so it can still be finished neatly where it does end up visible.

Fire rated versions, and what to do if 600 x 600 is wrong

Fire rated panels are listed at 600 x 600 in both materials. One hour rated versions are available with a metal door or a plasterboard faced door, in beaded and picture frames, and a two hour rated version is listed with a metal door and a beaded frame. A rated panel only performs as intended in the construction and orientation it was tested in, so confirm the wall or ceiling build up and the rating the job calls for with whoever is specifying it before you order. The wider rated range, including configurations not carried at this size, sits under fire rated access panels.

If 600 x 600 turns out to be more opening than the service behind it needs, 450 x 450 access panels offer a smaller aperture with the same door choices, and 600 x 300 access panels keep the 600mm width where a joist or a bulkhead limits the height available. Where the aperture is already fixed by something built, a made to measure access panel is built to your dimensions instead of asking the opening to suit a standard size.
